Basketball preseason poll

It's hard to believe that the basketball season is already upon us. The men's team was selected sixth in yesterday's poll with the women selected seventh. Be sure to check out the rundown of yesterday's poll release online. I'll have a season preview for both teams in the upcoming weeks.

Football vs. Kalamazoo

The Scots will face Kalamazoo on Nov. 3 in their final home game of the season. Alma College was off last week with a bye and head coach Greg Pscodna says that some of the younger players may have a chance to see some action with just two weeks remaining in the season. Coach Pscodna also added that this is a big and physical Hornet squad who is still fighting for their first MIAA win this season. This game is probably going to come down to whether or not the Alma College offense can reach the end zone. The Alma College defense has proved in recent weeks that they can compete and have shown improvement since the non-conference schedule was completed. The offense will need to work the clock, something it has struggled to do.

Conference tournament time

The women's soccer team and volleyball team are both in action today competing in the semifinals of their respective tournaments. Both teams made a strong push in the final week of the season to reach the tournament.

Homecoming Week

This week is homecoming at Alma College. The Scots football team is fresh off of their first win of the season last Saturday at Olivet College. This Saturday will be another big test for Alma College as it hosts preseason MIAA favorite Adrian College. The Bulldogs topped the Scot 16-0 last season. I'll be speaking with coach Pscodna on Thursday morning and will have a full game preview on Friday.

Jacob McCombie earns MIAA POTW honors

Alma College freshman punter Jacob McCombie has earned MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week honors. McCombie punted five times for a 40.6-yard average, including a long punt of 47 yards, in Alma’s 24-21 loss to Aurora. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career and placed two of his kicks inside the Spartans’ 20-yard-line.

Football week 3

I spoke with Coach Pscodna this morning and he believes his team matches up well with this week's opponent Aurora University. Both teams dropped games at Illinois Wesleyan with Aurora falling 49-13. Saturday's game is part of the MIAA/NAC Challenge Series as teams from the MIAA will travel to NAC schools. This season marks the start of the series with both conferences signing a four-year agreement. Home sites will alternate each season. I'll have a full game preview online Friday and in print on Saturday.
